Copy edit for Sidelines

When I was copy/editing I was emailed this story from Brinley Hineman. I looked through this story and the thing that was most common that I noticed was a few comma errors. I highlighted them in red.

Student Media Meeting

I went to this meeting and was in the room with a few people from this editing class and a couple others. The News Director of WMOT, Mike Osborne, was the person who was running the meeting but allowing everyone to talk when they wanted to speak. I brought up the story about Mark Zuckerburg testifying Tuesday, April 10, 2018 about Facebook. Jordan Johnson brought up a story about UFC Fighter, Conor McGregor, and how he went on a crazy rampage of throwing stuff into a bus and getting arrested. A Chattanooga homicide was also brought up inside of the room.

This is a heartwarming story that Ellen is making his dreams come true at such an early age.

I think this would be a good story because he takes a shot at Ben Simmons and it could start a “rivalry” in their playing careers against each other.

I don’t think this is a very good headline because it doesn’t have the President’s name. When you search John Bailey on Google a lot of different articles come out about the same story because his name is in their headline.

I think the correction needed to be made because Johnny Manziel is now attempting to come back to play for a team in the NFL, and there are lots of people that want to see him in their favorite team’s jersey. He came out and admitted he was wrong and that the Denver Broncos were not one of the teams watching him throw on that day. I believe it could’ve came back on him if people were to find out that the Broncos were not there and it would hurt his reputation.

Being able to listen to Kary Antholis and Thom Zimny speak was very interesting. I enjoyed being able to hear just exactly what those two guys think when they go through the process of making a documentary. Thom Zimny was saying he wanted to shy away from talking about Elvis’ drug use and begin to talk about what he meant to music in his time. “The Elvis Presley ’68 Comeback Story in a weird way brings back a part of the past to present,” Zimny said.

They both spoke about their upcoming documentary, “Elvis Presley: The Searcher,” that airs next month on HBO, and they were able to show the trailer to it and how they went about developing this documentary. Thom Zimny spoke about how he was able to get Priscilla Presley to agree to this documentary and how he was able to get Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen to voiceover in the documentary.

On the article of “Why Writers Lie,” I found that it completely ruins your reputation as a journalist if you are caught plagiarising in an article. It says in the article that if you are lying in an article do all you can to not get caught. There are different options if you do caught. It says you can drop out of sight, revert back to ordinariness, present the experience as crucible of wisdom, reboot back into the world of genre fiction or re-contextualize the episode as an exercise in myth-making.

Editing Classmate’s Obituary

The one thing I noticed looked is a very small mistake. There should be no space after Cavalli with the comma. It should be *he designed at Roberto Cavalli,*

Immediately after graduating he designed at Roberto Cavalli , and quickly climbing became the head of the brand’s womenswear division.

Note: This is a fictional story written for a college journalism course.

Jeremy Shu-How Lin, 29, died suddenly Feb. 18 in his home from a heart attack.

A native of Torrance, California, Mr. Lin is survived in death by his parents Gie-Ming (Shirley) Lin and brothers Joseph Lin and Josh Lin.

Mr. Lin was a talented basketball player that played for Harvard University where he set many records and a few seasons in the NBA. He was the first Harvard graduate that signed with an NBA team in 57 years. He ended his NBA career with the Brooklyn Nets. He was best known as the Super Lintendo. His plans for life after basketball was to become a pastor.

His death comes as a big shock to everyone as he was one of the most versatile players in the league. “This is a tragic loss for our nation. Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.” — former President Barack Obama

His visitation will be held at The Rock Church in San Diego, CA on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 2 p.m. with the funeral to follow and will be open to the public. The family has asked that you remember Mr. Lin for his great smile and jump shot.

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea — It was exactly noon, 12 o’clock high, when Shaun White stared down the halfpipe, looking again for the top of the world. He wondered if, to win a third gold medal at a Winter Olympics, he could do it on the last run.

I think this lead is great because it drew me in to see how he finished. Shaun White is one of the most iconic figures in snowboarding and with it being his final run winning a gold medal would be incredible.

IM- The Stylebook says abbreviation for instant message; sometimes used as a very: IM’ing, IM’d. Acceptable on second reference for instant messaging.

Cop- The Stylebook says to be careful in the use of this colloquial term for police officer. It may be used in lighter stories and in casual, informal descriptions, but often is a derogatory term out of place in serious police stories.

MiG- The Stylebook says the i in this designation for a type of Russian fighter Jet is lowercase because it is the Russian word for and. The initials are from the last names of the designers, Arten Mikoyan and Mikhail Gurevich.

GAAP- The acronym stands for Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Spell out on first reference.

Time Zones- The Stylebook says to capitalize the full name of the time in force within a particular zone: Ex. Eastern Standard Time

I would change “wouldn’t never” to would never and I would also change “Embid” to “Embiid” the way his last name is really spelled.fullsizeoutput_78aI get my news from several different news outlets. I get notifications to my phone from News Channel 5, The Tennesseean and Fox News. I also have a subscription with The Tennesseean that I am able to read all of their stories that they publish. I use Twitter and Facebook to get my news through social media. I believe that Twitter is one of if not the quickest way to get the most up to date news.
